Sherburne Inn Guest Spotlight: US Senator Scott Brown and Family

By john - Last updated: Sunday, July 24, 2011

United States Senator Scott Brown, his wife, daughter and her friend stayed with us this past weekend while the Senator participated in the 2011 Nantucket Triathlon. Senator Brown placed 4th in his age group cheered on by Gail, their daughter, Adriana, and her friend, Russell. It was hot with high-humidity at the start of the event. An isolated fierce thunderstorm passed by quickly during the Madakat Road bike loop. (For further details and results www.acktri.com).
When asked how he liked his accommodations at the Sherburne Inn the Senator remarked:  ”My room? – it’s like home. I love it.” As the Brown family was leaving Gail said a warm good-bye to Innkeeper Susan Daniels promising  to “spread the word about how comfortable the Inn was as well as it’s great location.”

Sherburne Inn Guest Spotlight: Celebrating a Family Fourth!

By john - Last updated: Wednesday, July 13, 2011

Three generations of the Beh Family gathered to celebrate the fourth of July weekend at the Sherburne Inn. Brian and Jessica are expecting their first baby in October which will make Grandmother Jean a great grandmother, Karen a great-Aunt, sixteen year old, Mikayla an Aunt, and Kathy and Dean grandparents for the first time!

This was not the first visit to Nantucket for most of the seven family members from the Rochester, NY area. Fond memories of Island summers brought them back to enjoy this family get together which included plenty of beach time, sightseeing and dining. They took full advantage of the Inn’s parlors, deck and garden to enjoy each other.

The Ship’s Inn seemed to be their favorite dinner spot, but watching the fireworks while dining at the Rope Walk at the end of Straight Wharf made for a spectacular evening.

Congratulations to the Beh family! It was our pleasure getting to know each of you while you shared family ties and got reacquainted with our unique Island. Many thanks to Kathy for making arrangements with us for this multi-generational gathering. It was a stand-out event in our Innkeeper’s log of memorable happenings.

Sherburne Inn Guest Spotlight: Home Away From Home

By john - Last updated: Tuesday, June 14, 2011

“A Home Away From Home” is what June and Celeste call Room #8 at the Sherburne Inn . When asked why, the pair from Fairfield County, CT explained how they discovered Nantucket just recently. Airplane travel had become a hassle, so they began to explore vacation possibilities closer to home.  Celeste and June had heard good things about Nantucket Island and decided to give it a try – outstanding restaurants; quaint, charming accommodations; historic romanticism; and miles and miles of natural beauty sounded ideal. On their third visit to the Sherburne Inn, and with the assistance of the Inn’s staff, they knew the basics of getting around and in and out of town, but were particularly enchanted with the nature walks they discovered just a few blocks away from the Inn.

A Cardinal became their alarm clock each morning, their private balcony became a welcomed retreat after a full day of nature trail walking, and they had a knack for selecting restaurants – the cherry on the top of an ideal day!

We weren’t at all disappointed when their recent visit came to an end because Celeste booked an August visit just before departure. They will be celebrating June’s 60th Birthday and a 30- year anniversary. So instead of “Good-bye”, we said, “ See you in August”! We can’t wait to welcome them back to their “Home Away From Home” – Room #8 at the Sherburne Inn.

Sherburne Inn Guest Spotlight: She Said “Yes”!

By john - Last updated: Thursday, June 2, 2011

Sherburne Inn guests, TJ and Sarah became engaged on a beautiful, romantic Thursday evening just before the Figawi sailors took over the Island last weekend.

TJ planed dinner at Galley Beach, a Nantucket restaurant known for it’s romantic sunset ambience for Sarah’s birthday.  Champagne and a special dessert menu were arranged for the couple.

Sarah’s menu had a dessert offering added just for her…

“A Slice of Happiness

Sarah, will you marry me?  I love you!”  TJ

After she read, and re-read the extra special dessert addition, she said, “Yes”!

A summer 2012 wedding is being planned in Richmond, VA.  Congratulations to Sarah and TJ!

Nantucket beaches featured in “top ten best in world”

By john - Last updated: Monday, May 2, 2011

National Geographic’s new book The 10 Best of Everything lists Nantucket beaches among the top ten in the world. Sharing the honor are: The Seychelles, Maldives, Bora Bora, The Hamptons, Lanikai Beach in Hawaii, Fraser Island in Australia, St. Bart’s, Langkawi in Malaysia, and Kauna’oa Bay in Hawaii.

Nantucket has 83 miles of pristine sand beaches.  The most popular beaches Surfside and Jetties. For bigger waves and surfing, the south side beaches are a treat. Most of these beaches are about a 20 minute bike ride from the inn, or if you prefer, there is a bus service to Surfside Beach.  Madaket Beach is known for its rougher surf and not-to-be-missed sunsets. You can take a shuttle out to Millies, a new west end restaurant and bar, to save youself a 30 minute bike ride. Offering changing facilities, a snack bar, and a shuttle bus from town, Jetties beach is about a 15 walk from the Inn. It is located on the warmer/calmer water of the Nantucket Sound (north) side of the Island and there’s plenty of sand to use for sunbathing or castle-building.

The Sherburne Inn provides complimentary beach towels, beach bags, and beach chairs to our guests.

Nantucket by eco bike tour

By john - Last updated: Wednesday, March 30, 2011

Eco-bike tours have officially arrived on Nantucket!

Those of you who have visited Nantucket in the past may know that over half the island is preserved in its natural state as conservation land.  Now, thanks to two young entrepreneurs, Jason Bridges and Courtney Nemeth, Sherburne Inn guests and others will be able to get to know and enjoy this magical island by taking an environmentally friendly guided bike tour.

Nantucket by Bike is now offering four tours of differing lengths and difficulties. “Half of these tours are going to be to the basic attractions that people want to see when they come to the island, but the other half is to find the hidden places that locals may not even know about and are best accessed by bike,” explains Bridges.

As part of our concierge service, we can help make your Nantucket stay more enjoyable.  Call us at 508-228-4425 to plan your next visit.

By john - Last updated: Friday, April 23, 2010

“There are many things that make this inn the perfect place for your Nantucket vacation, but their unique touches are what make it different; its quiet, yet convenient location on the island, continental breakfast delivered in a basket outside of the room, and freshly baked cookies every morning exceed guest’s expectations.”   www.bostonmagazine.com

Delightful Early Spring Visit !

Review

“We just came back from a early Spring visit to Nantucket and stayed at the Sherburne Inn. A cozy fire and a vase of spring flowers greeted us in the front parlor along with owners, John and Susan Daniels. They were very helpful in giving us suggestions on their “do not miss” list and helping us find an open restaurant for our anniversary dinner. American Seasons Restaurant had just opened and was a fabulous suggestion. The Whaling Museum terrific, and our bike ride extraordinary. We loved our visit and we’re thrilled to know the Sherburne Inn is open year-round. Room #4 has the most comfortable bed I’ve ever slept in away from home! We’ll be back!”

Why Are Our Beds so Comfortable?

By john - Last updated: Tuesday, March 30, 2010

Our details = your comfort

We get a lot of compliments about how comfortable our beds are. Susan’s recipe includes great ingredients, a lot of work, and painstaking attention to detail.

Each of our eight bedrooms starts with a well-secured solid mahogany wood frame, box springs, and a firm Serta mattress. Each mattress is topped with a hypoallergenic feather-substitute feather bed that you just sink into. On top of that is a mattress pad.

Our sheets are 100% Egyptian cotton. The bottom sheet is fitted and the top sheet and pillow cases have a scallop-lace trim. Each sheet and pillow case is starched and ironed by hand!

Each bed has 4 sleeping pillows made of hypoallergenic feather-substitute each with liner and pillowcase as well as a decorative pillow.

Each bed has a plush soft wool winter blanket and cotton summer blanket.

At the foot of each bed is a faux down or fur comforter. The beds are dressed with a Matelesse spread and a decorative bed skirt.

After each visit it takes up to three loads of wash to prepare a bed before we welcome the next guest.

Top 10 Reasons Not to Bring Your Car to Nantucket

By john - Last updated: Tuesday, March 30, 2010
  1. The round trip car ferry from Hyannis costs $380 from April thru October.
  2. For short stays it is cheaper to rent a car on island.
  3. The Nantucket Regional Transit Authority buses have a number of routes around the island, including to popular beaches and both ends of the island.
  4. Taxis are plentiful and reasonably priced.
  5. Downtown Nantucket suffers from daily grid-lock during July and August making travel across town very time consuming.
  6. It is hard to find parking spaces downtown and you need to move your car once every hour to avoid being ticketed.
  7. Outside of downtown, the island has miles of great bicycle paths.
  8. The best way to see the historic downtown area is on foot.
  9. There are very informative guided tour vans and buses which provide a good overview of the island.
  10. If you want to drive on a beach you need a 4 wheel drive vehicle with a beach permit (these can be rented by the day).

At the Sherburne Inn your knowledgeable hosts can provide you great advice on how to best navigate our island to satisfy your needs as well as assist you with any necessary bookings.
