“There are many things that make this inn the perfect place for your Nantucket vacation, but their unique touches are what make it different; its quiet, yet convenient location on the island, continental breakfast delivered in a basket outside of the room, and freshly baked cookies every morning exceed guest’s expectations.”   www.bostonmagazine.com

Delightful Early Spring Visit !

Review

“We just came back from a early Spring visit to Nantucket and stayed at the Sherburne Inn. A cozy fire and a vase of spring flowers greeted us in the front parlor along with owners, John and Susan Daniels. They were very helpful in giving us suggestions on their “do not miss” list and helping us find an open restaurant for our anniversary dinner. American Seasons Restaurant had just opened and was a fabulous suggestion. The Whaling Museum terrific, and our bike ride extraordinary. We loved our visit and we’re thrilled to know the Sherburne Inn is open year-round. Room #4 has the most comfortable bed I’ve ever slept in away from home! We’ll be back!”

Why Are Our Beds so Comfortable?

By john - Last updated: Tuesday, March 30, 2010

Our details = your comfort

We get a lot of compliments about how comfortable our beds are. Susan’s recipe includes great ingredients, a lot of work, and painstaking attention to detail.

Each of our eight bedrooms starts with a well-secured solid mahogany wood frame, box springs, and a firm Serta mattress. Each mattress is topped with a hypoallergenic feather-substitute feather bed that you just sink into. On top of that is a mattress pad.

Our sheets are 100% Egyptian cotton. The bottom sheet is fitted and the top sheet and pillow cases have a scallop-lace trim. Each sheet and pillow case is starched and ironed by hand!

Each bed has 4 sleeping pillows made of hypoallergenic feather-substitute each with liner and pillowcase as well as a decorative pillow.

Each bed has a plush soft wool winter blanket and cotton summer blanket.

At the foot of each bed is a faux down or fur comforter. The beds are dressed with a Matelesse spread and a decorative bed skirt.

After each visit it takes up to three loads of wash to prepare a bed before we welcome the next guest.

Room One Gets a Facelift

By john - Last updated: Tuesday, March 30, 2010

Any of our guests that stayed in Room 1 in the last few years will know that, while it was was very comfortable, it was a bit somber. So this winter Susan decided that freshening it up would be one of her big winter projects.

Searching the web she found Brad Bender’s Wallcoverings Installation Academy and decided to schedule a class in the Inn. Two other students joined Susan and Brad at the Inn for a week in January, using Room 1 as the classroom.  Here are some before, during, and after photos.

Susan picked out 3 complementary wallpapers: one with a geometrical pattern for the alcove with a new loveseat, a whimsical floral pattern for the main part of the bedroom, and a small patterned french style paper for the bathroom. The loveseat pulls out into a single bed allowing us to accommodate two traveling singles or an additional guest in the room

We have christened Room One ‘Cheery Welcome’ to reflect the totally new look and feel of the room, and feel confident that you would enjoy staying there.

Top 10 Reasons Not to Bring Your Car to Nantucket

By john - Last updated: Saturday, March 13, 2010
  1. The round trip car ferry from Hyannis costs $380 from April thru October.
  2. For short stays it is cheaper to rent a car on island.
  3. The Nantucket Regional Transit Authority buses have a number of routes around the island, including to popular beaches and both ends of the island.
  4. Taxis are plentiful and reasonably priced.
  5. Downtown Nantucket suffers from daily grid-lock during July and August making travel across town very time consuming.
  6. It is hard to find parking spaces downtown and you need to move your car once every hour to avoid being ticketed.
  7. Outside of downtown, the island has miles of great bicycle paths.
  8. The best way to see the historic downtown area is on foot.
  9. There are very informative guided tour vans and buses which provide a good overview of the island.
  10. If you want to drive on a beach you need a 4 wheel drive vehicle with a beach permit (these can be rented by the day).

At the Sherburne Inn your knowledgeable hosts can provide you great advice on how to best navigate our island to satisfy your needs as well as assist you with any necessary bookings.

Can I Play Golf on My Nantucket Visit

By john - Last updated: Saturday, March 13, 2010
Golfing under the lighthouse

5th tee at Sankaty

Hear the word “Nantucket” and many images spring to mind. The grey lady! The far away island! Miles of unspoiled beaches! Summer home to Wall Street wizards and corporate tycoons! Great restaurants! Rose covered cottages with hydrangeas abundant! Moby Dick and whaling history! More 18th century houses than any other community in the US! Cobblestone streets! No stoplights! To these and other images its time to add a new one: three great links golf courses and the longest golf season north of the Carolinas!

The grand old lady Sankaty Head Golf Club currently ranks in the top 100 older courses in the US. A 1923 design by Emerson Armstrong, it is the epitome of links golf and sits perched on the edge of the Atlantic at the eastern end of the island under the iconic Sankaty Head lighthouse. A strictly private course in the summer, where you can only play if invited by a member, it is, fortunately, open to the public for play from mid-October for mid-December, and mid-March to late-May. Knowing this “secret”  makes a golf outing to Nantucket in the fall or spring well worth the effort.

Nantucket Golf Club, is a Rees Jones designed links course, also out in Siasconset, which opened in 1998 and was ranked the best new private course in America that year by Golf Digest. It is almost impossible to get on unless you know a member, and only open from mid-May to mid-October, but if you’re ever invited there, jump through hoops to accept the invitation!

At the opposite end of the spectrum, and abutting the Nantucket Golf Club is the Old Siasconset Golf Course, affectionately known as Skinner’s. Built in 1894, it is one of the oldest privately owned golf courses in the US. A simple links style 9 holer, it is not watered, and has very small and very slow greens. Some people refer to it as a pasture golf course. Open to the public, it is inexpensive and informal, and only open in the summer and early fall. Fun to play if you are a hacker, you should give it a miss if your looking for a quality golf outing.

Miacomet Golf Course is the new kid on the block. Just two years old, this Howard Mauer designed links course is a complete remake of a former dull 9 holer. Almost 6,900 yards from the tips, and playing much longer than that in the typical Nantucket wind, this natural beauty features fast bent grass greens, waist high fescue rough grasses, and seemingly miles of sandy bunkers. You usually can hear the surf roaring from this south-side of the island course which snakes through Nantucket Land Bank land. It is rapidly establishing a reputation as one of the best public courses in Massachusetts and is every bit as stern a test as the other two courses, and lots of fun to play. Miacomet is open year round!

Sherburne Inn Guests are eligible for discounted greens fees and preferred tee times at Miacomet, and we would be glad to book you a tee time, as well as cart and club rental if required, at both Miacomet and Sankaty (SHGC just in the shoulder seasons). We are also pretty knowledgeable on what kind of clothing you will need to wear depending on the weather forecasts.

Some final words about our golf season. Because Nantucket sits 25 miles off the coast of Cape Cod, its weather is effected by the gulf stream which usually keeps us slightly warmer than the rest of New England. We consider the fall the best time to play golf on Nantucket, because most of the summer residents are gone, and the weather ranges from magnificent to tolerable on the golf course. We sometimes can play in short-sleeves well into December. January to March is very weather dependant, but the hard-core players usually can get in 10-15 days play per month. Spring golf is often chilly golf here, but not impossible. (It pays to watch the long range forecast to catch the most playable days here if your coming from off island during the quiet season).

So here’s a great idea for a golf getaway in the fall or spring. Come to the island with 2 or 4 golfers for at least 2 days. Play both Sankaty and Miacomet and stay at our comfortable Sherburne Inn. Explore the rest of our island and sample several of our island’s superb restaurants. We can make all the on-island arrangements for you to minimize your stress and best suit your requirements. We’re just a call away.

Happy golfing!

“What a great B&B!”

What a great B&B! The entire place was clean and was very close to town. Susan, one of the owners was very personable and her staff was also nice. We really liked the breakfast in a basket and ate our breakfast on the deck or in our room. This was our fifth time visiting Nantucket and we have stayed at a different B&B each time. We found the Sherburne Inn to be the best place we have stayed at yet. We will definitely book again with them the next time we visit.
